Note: The following is from Miscellaneous Genealogical Papers, collected by Rita Brown nee Christian, the original is in the Manx Museum:
William Christian son of Jane Woods ... [inherited Whinfield, Cumberland] ... might be identical with a William Christian who mined extensively in
Cumberland. In 1680 in the neighbourhood of Whitehaven he held leases at Corkicle, Whingil, Moresby & Distington....
Abstract of Will of William Christian of the Town & county of Newcastle-on-Tyne Esquire, 26 March 1698:
At this time intending to take a journey from home on His Majesty's Service I give to Ann, my wife, all my estate, seal & personal. Whereas I have
made a Deed to my nephew Ewan Christian of Whitehaven in the County of Cumberland, Gentleman, of som lands I have in the Parish of KK Marrowne in the
Island of Man after my death, reserving a power to charge such lands with a sum of money as I shall order by my Will, now I do order & direct the
said Ewan Christian shall pay to my wife £150. I appoint my wife Ann Executrix & I do hope that my Hon. Lord Derby, for whose family I have
suffered & have done faithful service, will in justice pay her monies, which is a great sum laid out & I have been forced to pay.
Codicil: 9 Jan 1705: To my wife Ann all my freehold estate & a moiety of a tenement called Priestgill in the Parish of St Bees in Cumberland & my messuage
in KK Marrowne called Glon Lough. ...
Note: Deemster Ewan stipulates that if William (son of Jane Woods) dies without children, then the lands at Glenlough and Whinfield, etc., are to go to
Ewan, son of William the Receiver General of Ronaldsway. However, this Ewan died in 1671, and his only child, a daughter, died in 1672, age 3 1/2 years.
This 'nephew Ewan' may (though unlikely) instead be the son of Deemster Edward Christian, the son of Deemster John of Milntown, the son of Deemster Ewan.
This Ewan (d.1719) bought Unerigg (renamed Ewanrigg), Cumberland about 1680, probably after marrying Mary Caine (died 1728), from Whitechapel, London.
