In the Name of God, Amen.  I John Oates Sen’r of Bebeallow
being Sick & weak in Body, but of sound & perfect Memory, praised
be God, do make & ordain this my last Will & Testament in man:
:ner & form following.  First I commit my Soul into the
hands of God, and my Body to be Christianly & decently buried in
ye parish Church:Yard close by ye Grave of my Grand:Daughter
Mary Oats, hoping thro’ ye Merits of Christ Jesus my Saviour
& Redeamer to have full & free pardon of all my Sins &
of a blessed Resurrection with ye [just?].  And as for what
worldly Goods it hath pleased God to bless me with I do dispose of them as
followeth –
I leave and bequeath unto my Son William Oats in Douglas,
all whatever Debts & Dues he owes me either by Note under his
hand or that he stands charg’d with in my own Book, & do
order that he shall not be troubled or molested for ye same
by my Executor or Ex’rs hereafter named all which I leave 
him as Legacy.  Itm. I leave & bequeath to my two Grand Chil:
:dren Marg.t & Ellinor Gelling four pounds jointly betwixt them
which sum of four pounds is in their Father Paul Gellings hands,
being ye Mortgage money which he ye sd Paul had from me in
Patrick Cotter’s Meadow.    Item, I leave & bequeath unto my
Daughter Isabel Moore als Oates all my house at ye Land Side in
Douglas together with ye length of ye sd House of Ground, the breadth
thereof to be up from ye sd House to Wm. Cannell, Carpenter’s Rent.
Item, I leave ye Vicar ten shillings, & he to preach my Funeral
Sermon.   Item, I leave to my Neighbour Thos Christian Kilvartyn
all what Clerk Fees are due to me in ye parish as Legacy Save what
Fees are due to me from James Christian Begoad & Jo’n Cannell
Sen’r of Bebeallow.  Lastly, I do constitute, ordain & appoint
my beloved Wife & Son John Oates joynt Ex’rs of all ye rest of
my Goods & Chattles of what Denomination soever, reserving to
her my sd. wife’s disposal all what Beasts she has abroad upon
Bargain.   In testimony whereof, my wife with me doth

Thomas Christian, one of ye Witnesses further declares that ye Testator

May ye 6th 1728.  Paul Gelling enters a Claim against
ye Ex’rs of Captain John Oates for ye sum of seven
pounds, & craves the Law.

Nov’r ye 11th 1728.  Mr. James Banckes enters a Claim
against ye Ex’rs of Capt’n Jo’n Oates for two boat
loads of lime stones, w’ch he lent him, & craves the
Law.
