25 Maughold
In the name of God, Amen. I Jane Christian als
Teare of Ramsey, being weak in body but of good
and sound mind and memory, for which I praise
God, do make this my last will and testament in
manner and form following.
First, I commend my soul to God, hoping through
the merits of my blessed Redeemer that he will
accept it, and my body to be decently buried at
the discretion of my executor hereafter named.
Secondly, I leave and bequeath to my son
Cavaleiro Christian the sum of forty pounds.
Thirdly, I bequeath to my son John Christian
the sum of forty pounds.
Fourthly, I bequeath to my daughter Jane Christian
the sum of forty pounds.
Fifthly, I bequeath to each of my brothers
& sisters one shilling legacy.
Sixthly and lastly, I nominate, constitute
and appoint my dear & loving husband Edward
Christian my whole and sole executor and
residuary legatee of all the rest of my goods,
whether house, houses, & garden with their
appurtenances, moneys, bills, lands, debts,
dues or demands, and whatever else is mine
of what kind, nature & quality soever and
if it should be the pleasure of God, that
all my said children die minors and intestate,
in that case I will and bequeath the whole
of the respective legacies left and devised
to them, to my said affectionate husband
and executor.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto
set my mark to my name this 28th day of
December in the year of our Lord 1756.
[signed her mark] Jane Christian.
Witnesses:
Thomas W. J. Woods,
Hugh Black.

At Ramsey January 31st, 1757,
Hugh Black one of the witnesses to the above will,
being now in a weak and infirm state of health,
upon the petition of Captn Edward Christian
executor bearing date January 29th, 1757, I
have administered the oath in that behalf of
the said witness, who has proved the will in
form of Law.

At a Court of Correction holden at
Lezayre February 28, 1757,
the Revd Thomas Woods the other witness to the
forgoing will has proved the same in for of Law,
whereupon Capt Edward Christian is sworn executor
in Court in for of Law, and by consent of Thomas
Tear brother of the testatrix who is sworn
supervisor of the children under age in form of
Law, the said children and their goods are
committed to the tuition of their father said
Capt Edward Christian who has given pledges
for payment of debts and legacies, namely
Revd. Mr. Woods Vicar of Maughold and
Thomas Tear the supervisor.

To the Revd Mr. Matthias Curghey Vicar General,
the Petition of Edward Christian of Ramsey:
humbly representing that the 1st of this instant
it pleased God that his wife departed this life,
and declared and executed the same as her last
testament in the presence of the Vicar of
KK Maughold and Hugh Black of Ramsey, who were
desired to attest the said instrument.
But the latter of the witnesses being at present
in a dangerous and ill state of health, and
should he die before the said will could be
legally proved in a full Court, the petitioner
apprehends it might be of the worst consequence
to him by p[lac]ing his affairs in confusion
and hurting his circumstances, he therefore
begs your Reverence please to come and take
the evidence of said Hugh Black at his
dwelling house in said town, in order to
prevent such troubles and litigations as
may otherwise ensue, and he as in duty
bound will pray &c.

At Lezayre January 29th, 1757
On consideration of the above petition, the Petitioner
is to give the next of kindred to Jane his deceased
wife notice to attend the Monday next betwixt the hours
of two and three in the afternoon at the house of Hugh
Black, to be by and present when the oath is to be
administered said Hugh Black as witness to the last
will of said deceased
