55      Bride
The last will and testament of William 
Christian of BallaCallow of the parish 
of KK Bride, by him made, by word of mouth, 
on the twenty eighty day of February 
in the year of our Lord, one thousand 
seven hundred and fifty eight, being in 
sound and disposing mind and memory 
at making thereof in presence of us 
who have subscribed our names as 
witnesses thereto. After he repeated over 
the Lord’s prayer, and the Apostle’s 
Creed, he proceeded in manner following.  
He left his daughter Bahee forty pounds; 
betwixt his legacy and what became due 
to her of her mother’s goods: as she 
had received no part of the same; 
And declared that the same money was 
in a mortgage in a place in KK Christ 
Lezayre called Close le Crappan.  
He left his daughters Catherin and 
Joney fifteen pounds apiece.  
He left his son William ten pounds.  
To his daughter William Christian of 
BallaBeg’s wife forty shillings.  
To his daughter Patrick Christian of 
BallaQuark’s wife forty shillings.  
He left Ballafail’s children a sheep and 
a lamb apiece.  
He left the poor of the Parish of KK 
Bride ten shillings.  
He left the witnesses of his will five 
shillings apiece.  
Lastly he named and appointed his son 
& heir John whole executor of all the 
rest of his goods and effects, moveable 
and immoveable whatever.  
And that what land he had made a purchase 
of in Close Holm in Lezayre should pass 
and descend in the nature of inheritance 
to the heirs of BallaCallow.  
He likewise declared that his daughter’s 
portions both in BallaQuark and BallaBeg 
were paid them.

Let not any pretended Will, however 
insinuated by or on the part of John 
Christian of Ballacallow in KK Bride 
as and for the last will and testament 
of Wm Christian late of Ballacallow 
aforesaid deceased, in writing or 
nuncupative, be received or proved 
in your Reverences Court, without 
Notice be given thereof to Wm 
Christian son and one of the next of 
kindred to the said deceased, to 
contest the validity of the said 
pretended Will according to the due 
forms of Law, in regard the said 
Deceased died intestate as will appear 
in the Event of such cause as shall 
be instituted for the insinuation 
and probation of the said Will, 
As witness my subscription, 
Ramsey, June the 11th 1764, 
[signed] William Christian.       

To the Revd Messrs Robert Radcliffe 
& Matthias Curghey Vicars General 
of this Isle, and to the Archdeacon’s 
Official and their respective 
registers within this Isle of Man.       
Recd the above caveat this 11th June 1764,

At a Chapter Court holden at 
Lezayre 18th June 1764: 
The Executor is sworn in Court in form 
of Law, and hath given pledges for the 
payment of debts & legacies namely Mr. 
Thos. Arthur Corlet of Lezayre and 
John Christian of Ballafayle KK Bride.  
Probatum est, Solvit 12d, Matths Curthey.                      

Lezayre 8th January 1765: 
This day Patrick Howland one of the 
Church Wardens of the parish of KK Bride 
came to the Registry and acknowledged 
that he hath received at & from the 
hands of John Christian son & Executor 
of the within named Testator William 
Christian of Ballacallow the full sum 
of ten shillings being the Legacy 
bequeathed by the said Wm Christian 
to the poor of the parish of KK Bride, 
and the said Patrick Howland is behalf 
of himself and the rest of the Church 
wardens of said parish doth hereby 
release, acquit and discharge the 
said John Christian his executors, 
administrators and assigns thereof 
for ever.  
Before me, John Gill, Ar. Regr.                   

Lezayre 27th May 1765: 
This day William Christian of Ramsey 
son of William Christian late of 
BallaCallow the within named Testator 
came to the Registry and acknowledged 
that he hath received the full and 
just sum of ten pounds being the 
legacy bequeathed unto him by the 
within last will and testament of 
his said father from the hands of 
his brother John Christian the 
Executor of said will, and he doth 
hereby release, acquit and discharge 
this said brother John Christian 
his heirs, executors, administrators 
and assigns thereof for ever.
