11      Braddan
In the name of God, amen. I Thomas Oates of the parish of 
KK Braddan being old and infirm, but of perfect mind and 
memory, calling to mind the uncertainty of this life, do 
make this my last will and testament. First, I commit my 
soul to God steadfastly hoping for a glorious resurrection 
and remission of my sins through Jesus Christ my Savior 
and my body to a Christian burial. 
Secondly, I leave and bequeath unto my son John Oates the 
sum of five shillings. 
Thirdly, I leave and bequeath unto my son Edward Oates the 
sum of five shillings. 
Fifthly [there is no 4thly], I leave and bequeath unto my daughter 
Catharine Millchreest als Oates the sum of ten pounds. 
Sixthly, I leave and bequeath unto my daughter Isabella 
Fayle als Key als Oates the sum of five pounds. 
Seventhly, I leave and bequeath unto my other claimants 
whether relation or persons strange who pretend to right 
or title to this my last will and testament the sum of 
two shillings and six pence British. 
Lastly, I leave my beloved wife Isabella Oates als Gelling 
to be my full and sole executor of all my goods and chattel 
moveable and immoveable of what kind and nature soever 
of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof 
I have hereunto set my hand and mark this second day of 
October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven 
hundred and ninety nine.

At an Ecclesiastical Court holden in 
the parish of KK Patrick on the 12th 
day of December 1800, 
the executrix is sworn in Court in form of Law and 
hath given pledges for the payment of debts and 
legacies namely the witnesses of the will. 
Probatum est [signed] Ev. Christian. 

To the Reverend Ev. Christian Vicar General of this Isle, 
the humble petition of Isabella Oates als Gelling widow 
of the parish of KK Braddan. 
Sheweth 
that Thomas Oates of the parish of Braddan aforesaid 
departed that life on or about the sixth day of November 
last past, 
That prior to that date he had executred his last will 
and testament whereon he appointed your petitioner sole 
executrix of his said will etc., 
And that the goods of the said deceased so bequeathed 
being in a perishable condition, Your petitioner most 
humble prays that in tender consideration of the promis[?] 
your Reverence may be pleased to order a speedy hearing 
of this petitioner that the next of kin to the said 
Thomas Oates deceased may be charged before your 
Reverence to establish the said Will, and your petitioner 
will pray and etc. 

Ordered that the beforegoing petitioner do come on to be 
heard at an Ecclesiastical Court to be holden in the Court 
house in this parish on Friday next whereof all proper 
parties and persons to have due notice. 
Given at KK Patrick 9th December 1800.

By virtue of Vicar General Christian’s order to the petition 
of Issabel Oates, I served and charged Patrick Mylechreest 
to appear before a Court to be holden at Mullen E Clee on 
Friday next by ten o’clock in the forenoon to answer the 
suit of said Issabel Oates and this I aver this 10th 
December 1800.

By virtue of the Revd. Vicar General Christian’s authority 
granted upon the Petition of Isabella Oates dated the 9th 
Instant, I have charged John Oates, Edward Oates, and John 
Fell as deponents and William Cliucas and William Quayle 
as witnesses to appear before his said Reverence at an 
Ecclesiastical Court to be holden in the parish of KK 
Patrick on Friday next by 10 o’clock in the forenoon to 
answer the suit of Isabella Oates. 
This I aver 10th December 1800.

I Patrick Mylechreest husband of Catharine Mylechreest alias 
Oates of KK Malew do hereby acknowledge to have received from 
Isabel Oates the executrix of the last will and testament of 
Thomas Oates of the parish of KK Braddan late deceased the 
sum of ten pounds, being legacy bequeathed to my said wife 
in the said will and do hereby release, acquit , exonerate 
and discharge the said Isabel Oates her executors, 
administrators and assigns of the same and every part 
thereof as witness my name and mark, this 17th day of April 1801.

At KK Patrick 17th April 1801, 
the said Patrick Mylechreest appeared personally before me 
and acknowledged the above release and receipt.

We John Oates, Edward Oates, & John Fayle husband of Isabel 
Fayle als Oates of KK Braddan, do hereby acknowledge to have 
received from Isabel Oates, executrix of the last will of 
Thomas Oates of said Braddan, late deceased the sum of five 
pounds ten shillings, being legacies left to us in the said 
Will (vizt., to the said Isabel Fayle five pounds, to Edward 
Oates five shillings, to John Oates five shillings) and 
therefore exonerate release and discharge the said Isabel 
Oates, her executors administrators and assigns of the same 
and every part thereof. As witness our names and marks this 
18th day of April 1801.
