1806 Douglas A 25 Elizabeth Alexander To the Revd Ewan Christian, one of the Vicars General of the diocese of Sodor and Man etc. The humble petition of James Alexander, Senior, ??? (craves?) if the Law of???? Sheweth, That your Petitioner’s wife namely Elizabeth Alexander, alias Bridson, some time lately, departed this life and previous to such her decease, duly made and published her Last Will and Testament in Writing , and thereof adjoined the petitioner sole Executor. That your Petitioner is anxious that the said Will should be give in and the probate (?) of the Executer thereof Committed to the Petition Wherefore your Petitioner most kindly praze (sic) in & hearing of the Petition. And that the said Will may be received in Court and that the Execution of the same maybe committed In the Name of God Amen, I James Alexander and Elizabeth Alexander als (nee) Bridson my wife both of the Town of Douglas of disposing mind and memory, and calling to mind the uncertainty of this life knowing that their appointed unto all men to die and then to Judgment do make and appoint this our last and Joint Will and Testament. To Commending our Souls to God who game them and our bodies to decent and Christian Burial , trusting a happy and glorious resurrection through the Mo??le of our Dear Redeemer Jesus Christ As as for what worldly goods I hath pledged God to bless us with we do leave and bequeath in the manner and style following/ We leave and bequeath unto our son Hugh Alexander, the little feather bed, and one Guinea ( £1.1shilling in old money) unto his wife Mary We leave and bequeath unto our son Thomas Alexander, our second best feather bed to each of them our sons, one Sheet We leave unto our daughter in Law Jane Alexander,, one Guinea We leave and bequeath a Nest (sic) of Drawers, which are in our Bedchamber, unto whomsoever of our sons may come to enjoy said room. We leave and bequeath unto our son Thomas Alexander, the cash due us from [blank] Kelly of Ballacronk in the parish of Kirk Conchan, who our said son shall get money (and providing he does not marry so becomes the property of the longer liver of us) We freely forgive our son James Alexander all the sum of money which he was due us – namely 3 Guineas and a half We also freely allow our son Hugh Alexander the rest of that part of the house where he dwells which part at said house is settled upon him, as explained in a Deed of Gift bearing the date the 20th December 1805 We also propose and agree that our son Thomas is to enjoy the parlour end of the house we dwell in and the closet where in he sleeps free rent from the date of this our will during his natural life. Lastly we leave and bequeath each to other of the longer liver of us, all and singular the remaining part of our effects be they of what kind and nature whatsoever, with half a crown legacy to any claiment hereby nominating constituting and appointing the longer living of us whole and sole Executor. At an Ecclesiastical Court holden in the parish of Kirk Patrick On the 7th day of March 1806 Elizabeth Alexander, one of the Testators having departed this life, James Alexander the survivor is sworn Exec?, in Court, in Form of Law and hath given pledges for the payment of debts and legacies namely the witnesses of the will. Probatum Est Ev. Christian I hereby certify that the Revd. Vicar Genl. Christian, Order granted whom the Petition of James Alexander Senr. Served and charged Hugh Alexander, Thomas Alexander and John Alexander defendants and William Murry and Charles Ailen (Allen?) witnesses, all to appear at an Ecclesiastical Court to be holden at the Court house in Kirk Patrick on Friday next by 10 O Clock in the forenoon, to answer the witnesses in the said Petition so contained this 6th March 1806.
