24     Malew
This is the last will and testament of me CATHARINE OATES 
of the parish of Malew but formerly of the parish of Braddan, 
WIDOW OF EDWARD OATES of the said parish of Braddan deceased.  
Whereas in and by a certain deed of Settlement bearing date 
the twenty fourth of April one thousand eight hundred and 
thirty eight granted and executed by the said EDWARD OATES 
deceased to and in favor of his SON EDWARD OATES JUNIOR, 
the said Edward Oates deceased did with the consent of me 
the said CATHARINE OATES, give grant alienate and settle unto 
and upon the said Edward Oates junior, his heirs and assigns 
all and singular a certain estate of lands particularly 
described in the said deed, to be possessed b him at the 
death or decease of the survivor or longest liver of the 
said Edward Oates and me Catharine Oates his wife, he the 
said Edward Oates junior paying unto whom we should appoint 
the sum of three hundred and fifteen pounds British to be 
paid at the expiration of twelve months after he should 
possess the said estate.  And whereas the said Edward Oates 
has since departed this life intestate and without having 
exercised the power of appointment of the said sum of three 
hundred and fifteen pounds in and by the said deed of 
settlement to him and me the said Catharine Oates reserved 
now in testimony of the sincere love and affection which 
I have and do bear unto my DAUGHTER CATHARINE WATTERSON and 
by virtue of the power and authority to me reserved and given, 
in and by the said in part recited deed of settlement, I 
the said Catharine Oates do by this my last will and testament, 
give, devise, bequeath, direct, limit and appoint the said 
sum of three hundred and fifteen pounds, or as much thereof 
as I am entitled at law or in equity or whereof I have any 
power to dispose to my said DAUGHTER CATHARINE WATTERSON 
her executors, administrators and assigns, and I do hereby 
direct the said EDWARD OATES JUNIOR to pay over the same 
to the said Catharine Watterson in terms of the said deed 
of Settlement.  And I do leave and bequeath unto my said 
daughter Catharine Watterson her heirs and assigns the whole 
of my right, title and interest in and to the estate, lands, 
houses, and premises of Croit Vane in the said parish of 
Braddan, which estate was purchased by said HUSBAND EDWARD 
OATES from JOHN FARGHER, and so bounded on the north by the 
Union Mills Plantation, on the south and east by the 
Highroad and on the west by Ballastowell.  
I give and bequeath to ROBERT CHRISTIAN MY GRANDSON the 
tithe of that parcel of land of which he is heir at law, 
the said tithe being formerly purchased from MR. QUAYLE 
of Castletown.  
I give and bequeath unto CHARLOTTE FARGHER WIFE OF ROBERT 
FARGHER of the town of Peel one pound British.  
I give and bequeath to JOSEPH CLARK GRANDSON OF  EDWARD OATES 
deceased ten shillings.  
And I also leave and bequeath to my said DAUGHTER CATHARINE 
WATTERSON, her heirs, executors, administrators and assigns 
respectively all the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, 
goods and effects whether personal or real hereby nominating 
her the said Catharine Watterson to be executrix of this my 
last will and testament, and hereby absolutely revoking all 
other will or wills by me heretofore made, I declare this to 
be my only true last will and testament to which I have 
affixed my name or mark this 4th day of April one thousand 
eight hundred and fifty one.

WHEREAS THE ECCLESIASTICAL COURT OF THIS DIOCESE hath this 
day granted probate of the will of CATHERINE OATES of Malew 
deceased to CATHERINE WATTERSON, widow, the executrix named, 
and whereas ROBERT SHIMMIN of Bollabeg of the parish of 
Arbory and WILLIAM FARGHER of Cooileau in the parish of 
Malew have agreed to become pledges for the said Cath. Watterson 
for the administration of the said estate according to law, . . . 
Witness our subscriptions this 13th day of May 1853, 
at a Chapter Court held at Castletown the 13th day of May 1853.
