In the name of God Amen. I John Gell of the 
parish of Rushen being weak in body but of 
perfect mind and memory do make this my last 
will and testament in the manner following.

First I commit my soul to Almighty God and my 
body to a Christian burial.

Secondly I leave and bequeath to my beloved 
wife my share of the tithe of my land and my 
share of the half of the dwelling house.

Thirdly I leave and bequeath to my eldest daughter 
Ann Gell all my estate and land and houses and 
the said daughter Ann Gell to pay to my two 
daughters .... out of the said lands the sum of 
five pounds each. Namely Margaret Gell and Jane Gell 
and they are not to posses the five pounds each 
until they are twenty eight years of age.

Fourthly I leave and bequeath unto my daughter 
Margaret Gell two shillings and sixpence to her as legacy. 

Fifthly I leave and bequeath unto my daughter Jane 
two shillings and sixpence to her as legacy.

Sixely and last, I nominate constitute And ordain 
my beloved wife Judy Gell sole and whole executor 
of all the rest of my goods, cash, credits, cattle 
or effects of whatever kind or denomination. She 
the said Judy Gell to pay to any person or persons 
who shall claim or sue for anything con.... 
To this my last will and testament, the sum of two 
shillings and sixpence as legacy. Ratifying and 
confirming this to be my last will and testament 
in testimony whereof I have herewith subscribed 
name or mark this the 12th of October 1841.

At a Chapter Court holden at Castle Town 
on the 13th May 1853

William Corrin and William Kegg the subscribing witnesses 
to the foregoing paper purporting to be the last will of 
John Gell deceased, having made oaths on the Holy evangelists 
that said John Gell the testator when of sound and disposing 
mind memory and understanding duly signed and executed the 
same in their presence as and for his last will and testament. 
Judith Gell, widow his relict, the executrix therein named 
is therefore sworn well and truly to fulfil and execute said 
will according to law to pay all just debts legacies and 
funeral expenses of said testator so far forth as the goods 
and effects will extend and the law bind her and to return 
to the Archdeacon’s Registry a full true and perfect inventory 
of said goods and effects with an accurate account of her 
acts and proceedings in the premises when thereunto lawfully 
required and to these ends she has given pledges namely 
William Kegg of Scollaby and William Lowey of Kirkhall both 
in the parish of Rushen who have executed the usual bond in 
the presence of the Court
