Will of brother: EpW 1670E #062 Michael will of Mr Hugh Cannell, waterbailiff, died 4 April 1670: wife Margaret Cannel alias Calcott, father is dead, dau Leonora, sister Mrs [Ellin] Radcliffe als Cannell [married Thomas Radcliffe per her will ArW 1689A #044 Rushen]. Will of grandfather: EpW 1670E #061 Michael, of Sir Hugh Cannell, died 10 May 1670: 1st wife [Jane Gell, her will ArW 1631A #28 Michael], 2nd wife [?Ellin Cannell als Garrett als Kelly, ArW 1649A #34 Ballaugh] is not mentioned, granddau Mrs Margaret Cannell; goddau/ggranddau Leonora Cannell, granddau Mrs Ellin Radcliffe alias Cannell (married Thomas Radcliffe of Knockaloe, her will ArW 1689A #044 Patrick), cousin (?or greatgrandson) Silvester Radcliffe of Knockaloe, grandson James Cannell, dau Mrs Ann Cannell, grandson in law Thomas Radcliffe of Knockaloe (married to Ellin Cannell, he entered a claim for 16£), also: John Quayle, Charles Cannell, Mally Cannon, Dorothy Sherlock, Margaret Caine, Charles Cannell. See: Arthur William Moore, M.A., Old Manx Families, 1889, manuscript, Manx Museum: "Thomas Radcliffe, living in 1651, was probably either a brother or a cousin of Samsbury Radcliffe of Gordon. He had a son Silvester, C.P., (b 1652, d 1731), who was buried in the chancel of St Peter's Peel. Silvester had a son Charles, a daughter Margery (died without progeny), and probably, though much younger than the others, a son Robert Charles C.P. (born 1677, died 1733) married Eleanor Christian (born 1680, died 1756)." The first Radcliffe of Gordon was Samsbury, who was conspicuous in the Rebellion of 1651. He was Captain of the Militia of the Mark and beseiged Peel Castle. He was an MHK and was living in 1662." Will of husband: ArW 1702A #14 Patrick will of Captain Thomas Radcliffe of Knockaloe: Be it known by these presents that I THOMAS RATCLIFFE of Knockalow did promise to give unto my DAUGHTER ANN when she married WILLIAM HARRISON of KK Malew in marriage portion or dowry all the rents or duties that is due to me yearly out of my part of Knockaloe & also rent of the lands that are in the parish of KK Christ Lezaire with all the rest of my goods moveable and unmoveable whatsoever, excepting my following piece, which I design to leave to my GRANDSON CHARLES RATCLIFFE and a feather bed to my SON JAMES. All which I do oblige myself still to perform, and in consideration thereof the said WILLIAM HARRISON AND MY DAUGHTER ANN did and do hereby oblige themselves to give and allow me meat drink lodging and apparel during my natural life. For performance of all which I the said THOMAS RATCLIFFE & WILLIAM HARRISON & ANN HIS WIFE have obliged ourselves our heirs and Executors each to other in the penalty of twenty pounds and nature of all fines. In testimony whereof we have to our names put our seal this 30th day of December 1701. [signed] Thomas Ratcliffe, Will Harrison, Ann Ratcliffe. Witnesses: Henry Bell, Will Harrison. 20 FEBRUARY 1701/2: HENRY BELL AND WILLIAM HARRISON witnesses to the within Agreement have deposed the same to be the free and voluntary act and deed of the parties thereunto and that the above THOMAS RATCLIFFE xxxx not able to hxxxx, desired that the same might be proved in his life before me, John Parr. FEBRUARY 23RD 1703: JOHN KEWLEY ENTERS AGAINST the Executors of Capt. THOMAS RADCLIFF for 40 shillings and the interest thereof for two years, and craves the Law. AT A COURT HELD IN PEELTOWN JUNE 11TH 1703: THE WITHIN DEED being proved before the Deemster, the same is accepted of for the last will of CAPTN. THOMAS RATCLIFFE, and WILLIAM HARRISON HUSBAND TO THE WITHIN ANN is accordingly sworn in Court in form of Law. JUNE 11TH 1703: CAPTN SILVESTER RATCLIFF enters his clam against the Executors of his FATHER CAPT THOMAS RATCLIFFE for half the team, and half the crop of corn or the sum of nine pounds promised the claimer by his said father for and toward the redemption of three daymaths of hay mortgaged by him to JOHN QUAIL of Ramsey, as will be made to appear and craves the Law. NOTE: The signature of husband Thomas Radcliffe is shaky, like that of an old man.
In the name of God Amen, I Elinor Radcliffe being sick & weak in body, but in perfect mind & memory praised be God, doe make this my last will & testamt: in manner & forme following first I commend my soule to Almighty God my Creator hopeing through the meritts of my blessed Redeemer to receive full pardon & forgivenesse of all my sinnes, & my body to be buried in St Petrs: Church of Peele, in confidence of a joyfull Resurrection at ye last day, to be reunited to my soul, & made partaker of the heavenly kingdome prepared for those yt love & fear ye Lord Itm: I leave to my three daughters Christian Ann & Ellinr tenne pounds a peice or to each; Itm: I leave to my four sonnes vizt: John Thomas Henry & James five pounds to every one of them Itm: I leave to my grandchildren Ellin & Michael & Samuell Radcliffe tenne shillings apeice, & to all ye rest of my grandchildren 5s apeice Itm: I leave to my minister five shillings & to my son Sill: five shillings. Lastly I constitute & appoint my dear husband Tho: Radcliffe, & my son John my sole & joynt Executrs: of the rest of my goods moveable & unmoveable; the forme of whome Tho: Radcliffe hath consented that after all debts (lawfully proved) are truly satisfied, that all & every ye foresd Legasies should be paid first out of his wifes pt of goods, & then what wants th---[edge] be paid out of his pt.
