Archdeacon Will 1689A #019 Santan will of John Oates, of Knockfroy?, dated 9 November 1689, bought land near Grenick Harbor & other farmland:   
Summary: wife [Ellin Martin] remarried John Kneale tailor [she died December 1705, Episcopal will, 4 underage sons including William, dau Ann (of age by 1702), 
plus a youngest daughter; witnesses & pledges: John Quinney & Philip Kinley, ?NOTE, see 1703/4 Composition Book Santan regarding the farm Ballavilley for a listing 
of 3 sons: John & William & Thomas.
Wife: Santan parish register: Ellin Kneal als Martin of Knocfrey buried 16 Dec 1705 [wife of John Kneale] Episcopal Will.
   Ellin Martin dau (of age) of John Martin, will 1663A #147 Santan   [His wife is Christian Kelly.].
   Ellin Martin sister of Christian Bridson alias Martin will 1684A #056 Santan.

Self: 1664 Liber Vastarum, Santan: Thomas Quay was entered for farmland of 12d yearly rent in Saurbricke treen (total rent 13s 8d), and he sold the land 
(with the consent of his nephew Thomas Quay, the son of Christopher Quay) to John Moore & John Oates who were entered for the 12d rent in 1664.
Self &c: 1675 Liber Vastarum, Santan: John Taggart had a parcel of intack land of 6d rent (total intack rent of 3s 2d) and he was long dead, with the right to the 
rent descending to his daughter Margaret Taggart, & she gave it by marriage contract to her daughter Joney xxx & her husband Philip Kinley, and they were dead & 
by their executorhsip it fell to John Caine & Robert Caine, being the next of relations; so that now the said John & Robert Caine his son sold the rent to John 
Oates who was entered for it in 1675.
Self &c: 1675 Liber Vastarum, Santan: John Taggart had a parcel of intack land of 3d rent (total intack rent of 4s) and he was long dead, with the right to the 
rent descending to his daughter Margaret Taggart, & she gave it by marriage contract to her daughter Joney xxx & her husband Philip Kinley, and they were dead &

Self etc: 1682 Liber Vastarum, Santan: Christopher Brew had farmland of 21 3/4d yearly rent in Knockaloughan treen (total rent 18s), & he was dead with the right 
to the rent falling to his daughter Jane Brew who, with the consent of her husband Christopher Bridson, sold it to John Oates who was entered for it in 1682. 
Self etc: 1689 Liber Vastarum, Santan: John Oates had farmland of 21 1/2d yearly rent & Thomas Martin had 7 1/4d rent & Thomas Brew had 6s 13 rent in Knockloughan 
treen (total rent 18s) and the quest avouched that there was an error in the apportionment which should be as follows: John Oates 19d + 3 parts of 2d, Mary Fargher 
for 4 1/2d, Thomas Martin for 12 1/2d & 3 parts for 2d, and John Brew (son of Thomas Bres) for 6s + 2 parts of 2d.
self etc:  1682 Liber Vastarum, Santan: Christopher Brew & Thomas Martin had a parcel of intack of 1/2d yearly rent belonging to Knockaloughan treen (total rent 3s 
6d?), & Christopher was dead with the right to his part of the rent falling to his daughter Jane Brew who, with the consent of her husband Christopher Bridson, sold 
it to John Oates, so that in 1682, John Oates & Thomas Martin were entered for the 1/2d rent.

possession of it & was entered for it in 1684.

   Wife & [her 2nd husband &] ?brother in law: 1704 Composition Book, Santan: a parcel of intack land of the commons called Money not yet compounded for (3s 7 1/2d 
   total rent):  widow [Ellin] Oates [als Martin, she remarried John Kneale] & John Martin had a parcel of intack of 1 1/2d rent, others rented other parcels of the 
   same intack for mostly 1 1/2d rent, with William Kissage for 9d & John Brew for 4d.
   Wife & her 2nd husband: 1704 Composition Book, Santan: Ellinor Oates [alias Martin] widow [of John Oates] & her 2nd husband John Kneale tailor were entered for 
   intack of 2d rent, adjoining to Knockfrey & taken in 1611 by Christopher Brew, for which no composition appears.
Son & [wife] & 2nd husband of wife &c: 1704, Old Santan Mortgages, #2 & #3:  date 29 December 1704:  William Cowle of Santan & his father William Cowle mortgage for 
£3 9s English to John Kneale a parcel of land called Renndouw adjacent to John Brew's land rent 2d, witnesses John Martin & William Crebbin; 1707: John Kneale 
assigned the mortgage for 34s [6d] to Robert Moore, NOTE, that the other half was the right of his stepson [William Oates] by the will of his wife [Ellin Kneale alias 
Oates alias Martin died December 1705], also NOTE, that stepson William Oates & his wife Margaret Oates alias Caveen who had the right to the other half of the land 
assigned their half to Robert Moore; 1714: Robert Moore acknowledges payment of 34s; setting quest place rent at 2.5 yearly rent.
?Son &c: 1706, Old Santan Sales #05: date 8 November 1706: marriage contract between John Oates of Santan (his father is dead) & William Kelly on behalf of his 
daughter Catharine (her mother & granmother are dead), witnesses: William Corlet & John McYlcarton?, Court October 1710.
?Sons: 1703/4 Composition Book, Santan: the farm of Ballavilley in Mear treen & part of Grenickle / Grenwyk treen: 1st part, John Cosnahan clerk had 12s 2d double 
rent in Meary & 12s 9d double rent in Grenickle treen, with Robert Brew having 8d double rent in Meary treen. 2nd, Thomas Moore had another part of 13s 2d double 
rent in Meary & 12s 9d double rent in Grenickle with William Bridson of Ballaquiggin entered for 1d in Grenickle & Thoms Bridson for another 1d. 3rd: Hugh Cowle 
was entered for 3d double rent, John Moore for1d, and John Oates & William Oates & Thomas Oates for 1d more, being the remainder in Grenickle treen. Total rents 
are 16s 8d, with 36d for one quarter in Meary treen, and 30s 8d for 2 half quarters in Grenickle treen.  All this land was compounded for in 1643 by Thomas Quay, 
fine then was £5.   Lives in being is expired, so to pay now in proportion, £5.
